Black Hole Disco

Lynda wrote this original tune in honor of physicist Kip Thorne. She performed this song at the Kip Fest which was a celebration of Kip's 60th birthday and his contributions to physics.

Kip is largely responsible for the search for gravitational waves and the construction of the gravity wave detector, LIGO, which should go online in 2001. Although gravity waves are theorized to be very weak, however, LIGO should be able to detect the gravitaitional waves produced when two black holes collide.

The frequency of the gravity waves of colliing black holes should be within the range of frequencies of audible sound waves (100-1000Hz). If you represent the gravity wave with a sound wave, you get a 'chirp' sound . Lynda digitized a computer generated chirp (created by DR. Scott Hughes) and wrote this song for Kip. The chirp is looped and provides the bottom rhythm of the tune which has an undeniable Disco sound.

Lynda performed Black Hole Disco at the Cosmic Cabaret.
Here is a clip of that performance.
